Latitude 34 is the parent company of wine brands Optimus, St Johns Brook, The Blackwood and Barwick Estates (www.barwickwines.com). Margaret River is the physical base of the business, the winery being St Johns Brook. The 120ha of vineyards is made up of 37ha in Margaret River, and 83ha in the Blackwood Valley, the Pemberton vineyards (68ha) having been sold in 2015. Exports to the UK, the US and other major markets.
St Johns Brook Single Vineyard Margaret River Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2015 Machine-harvested, crushed/destemmed, cultured yeast, matured in tank and French oak (10% new) for 12 months. The considerable winemaking inputs have produced a crisp, crunchy wine; needed more mid-palate fruit for higher points, but does have good length. Screwcap. 12.2% alc. Rating 90 To 2017 $24
The Blackwood Sir Henry Shiraz 2014 20+yo vines, machine-harvested, destemmed and crushed, fermented in tank with cultured yeast, 10–16 days post-ferment maceration, matured in used French oak for 12 months. Good colour; a medium to full-bodied shiraz with red and black cherry fruits coupled with spice, pepper and licorice, tannins and oak under control. Has time to go. Screwcap. 14.5% alc. Rating 90 To 2034 $50
Optimus The Terraces Block 2 Shiraz 2013 20+yo vines from the Blackwood Valley, matured for 12 months in new American oak. Very good colour; this is very full-bodied, all the dials of power, fruit, tannins and oak turned up to maximum, the saving grace the (relatively) lower alcohol in this wine compared to the 15.3% of its ’14 sibling. Biggest is a long way short of best. Screwcap. 14.6% alc. Rating 90 To 2028 $72
Barwick Estates Black Label Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 Crushed/destemmed, 10–16 days post-ferment maceration, matured for 12 months in French oak (50% new). The wine is only just medium-bodied, and the new oak is obvious. With a few more years in bottle, the oak should integrate. Double-gold China Wine & Spirits Competition ’14 (curious timing), bronze medal Melbourne Wine Awards ’15. Screwcap. 13.3% alc. Rating 90 To 2024 $32
The Blackwood Captain James Cabernet 2014 Rating 89 To 2020 $45
Optimus The Terraces Block 3 Cabernet 2014 Rating 89 To 2034 $85
The Blackwood El Toro Rojo Tempranillo 2014 Rating 89 To 2018 $40
The Blackwood Rushy Creek Rose 2015 Rating 88 To 2017 $15
